Spring 2005 Service Project

GCHBA volunteers did the following work at Cottonwood Campground:

Tuesday 10 May, 2005
  • GCHBA volunteers hiked to Cottonwood Campground.
  • Gene Fowler brought in a replacement thermostat for the refrigerator in the ranger station. He replaced the thermostat on our arrival. 
  • We then reviewed Eric Keefer's project list.

    Wednesday 11 May, 2005
  • Cleaned out the drainage trench from the pelton wheel (a water turbine that supplies electric power to the ranger station).
  • Cleared brush from all buildings.
  • Rehabilitated the ranger station swamp cooler.
  • Carried loads of brush trimmings to the campground to be used for social trail obliteration.
  • Cleared trails in the area of the ranger station.

    Thursday 12 May, 2005
  • Painted all but four picnic tables in the campground and day-use areas.
  • Linseed oiled the fence at the ranger station.
  • Moved more brush to the re-vegetation areas.
  • Planted one tree.  Three trimmings were planted in a nursery.
  • Trimmed small trees near the ranger station.
  • Worked on North Kaibab Trail above campsite # 1.
  • Re-worked water diversion at spigot near trail in the campground.

    Friday 13 May, 2005
  • Painted last four picnic tables.
  • Did more work in the plant nursery.
  • Removed the log and rock jam at the Wall Creek trail crossing.
  • Rest of day spent enjoying the area.

    Saturday 14 May, 2005
  • Cleaned inside of ranger station.
  • Hiked out.
