A naturalized-native Arizonan from 1956, age 6, and living my early years in Tucson and Tempe. Graduated from University of Arizona, studying psychology, sociology, anthropology and education, but gave up on the people-professions since 1982 and currently assisting the microprocessors and information systems taking over our world as a practicing software engineer -- now my third career, the first having been starving musician. Some of my computer work was tank terminal automation in Spain where I learned Spanish reasonably well of necessity, and greatly enjoyed the place, people and culture.

My first visit to Grand Canyon was the north rim at age 3 -- first hike to the bottom at 12. I rode the river from Lees Ferry to Temple Bar at 18, and led my first backcountry trip at age 20. Since then I have hiked over 200 days below the rim and rafted Grand Canyon 5 times. I went with George Steck and Gary Ladd around Powell Plateau in 1990, which included the Stina flash flood incident described in Grand Canyon Loop Hikes. My special interest is re-discovering historic trails and old routes, and I have a respectable book collection for reference.

My Grand Canyon Off-the-Trail website is at

My wife, Deborah, displays her artwork on the web at

I have been a board member since Oct 2001 and consistently promoted the role of GCHBA in reviewing backcountry permit, access and use issues.
My priorities for GCHBA are:

bulletPreserve Grand Canyon for future generations.
bulletMaintain non-commercial access to the backcountry secondary to preservation.
bulletAddress Grand Canyon operational policy as it relates to the hiking community.
bulletFacilitate service projects to support and assist Grand Canyon NPS operations.
bulletProvide fellowship and exchange of information with other hikers.
