I was born
and raised in Minnesota, and spent my first 50 years there. I began hiking and backpacking
in 1998. I section hiked the Superior Hiking Trail along the north shore of Lake
Superior. In 2000 during a visit to my mother in Prescott, I dayhiked down the Bright
Angel trail to Plateau Point. It was then I developed an instant need and desire
to do some extensive Grand Canyon hiking. In 2001 I hiked solo down Hermit Rest
and up the Bright Angel, including overnights at Hermit Rapids, Granite Rapids,
and Horn Creek. It was marvelous! That trip created more pain than I've ever felt
in my life. But it also was the most wonderful and thrilling thing I've ever done.
I felt an exhilaration I've never felt anywhere else! I experienced some soul-searching
moments on that trip. It literally changed my life. In 2002 I moved to Prescott
to be near my mother, and also to be near the Canyon.
Since that first hike I've participated in several Grand Canyon excursions. To Phantom Canyon, Horseshoe Mesa, and Bright Angel Campground. In March of 2003 I managed to break my ankle on a misstep on the Grandview Trail. I will never forget the terrific performance by the Grand Canyon SAR, and the helicopter team. They are awesome and extremely professional! The helicopter ride was terrific, but the injury caused me to miss long-planned Thunder River and Hance trips. By October I was finally able to hike again, and my first real hike was a South Kaibab-Bright Angel loop with an overnight at Indian Garden.
I plan to spend many more nights in the Grand Canyon, some of them in places I've been before, and others in places I've never seen. I still want to do Thunder River, and I'd like to repeat my first hike.
I am very happy to be able to serve on the Board of the GCHBA. I am convinced that without the advice and help of members of the GCHBA I would never have been able to hike in Grand Canyon.
