| The National Park Service is
removing the ammo cans from Hermit Creek, Monument Creek and Clear Creek.
The process is in process so do not count on the cans being there even if
someone tells you they were they recently. The Canyon District Ranger made this decision because they too often
became trash receptacles for hikers who may or may not have known better.
At any rate, the actions of the few have some unfortunate consequences,
and the cans filled with rotting food and gear become a rodent draw and a
management problem. The Cottonwood, Bright Angel and Indian Garden ammo
cans will remain in place, as those campsites are monitored daily by
Canyon staff and are working well. The Backcountry Information Center is
actively pursuing other ways to educate and inform hikers about the
necessity of protecting their food from wildlife and wildlife from their
food. People headed through Hermit Loop or out to Clear Creek (and
everywhere else for that matter) should have have a plan for managing
their food in the backcountry. If you have questions please contact the Backcountry Information Center at (928)638-7875. The GCHBA is considering selling solutions to backcountry food management in our store. |
