Fall 2006 Service ProjectThe GCHBA Fall 2006 Service Project will be held Wednesday, October 11 to Monday, October 16, 2006 at Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground. The first and last days are for hiking in and out. The project work activities should similar to what we did at the 2005 Fall Service Project with the addition of some reveg work. You should be a member and must commit to working about 6 or 7 hours a day during the project. There is usually one non-work day that you can do other activities such as a dayhike. You do not have to participate for the whole time but we need to know your schedule in advance for meal planning. The spots are filling up quickly so if you are interested in participating please contact us. Gene Fowler Project Coordinator
Fall 2006 Board of Directors MeetingMembers and non-members are welcome to attend. Meeting location: Grand Canyon Recreation Center Directions:
Old Bright Angel/Old Kaibab/David Rust Trail Service ProjectThe main project will be to clean up the brush in a section of the Old Bright Angel/Old Kaibab Trail/David Rust. August 17 is the 100th anniversary of the trail which was originally constructed by David Rust. This trail went from from the North Rim down Bright Angel Canyon to the Rust Camp (now known as Phantom Ranch) and to the river. He called it the Bright Angel Trail. This upper section of the trail near the bridge where the North Kaibab Trail crosses Bright Angel Creek below Roaring Springs is now known by different names -- the Old Bright Angel, the Old Kaibab Trail or the "David Rust Trail". There is some talk going on about changing the official name of upper section to the David Rust Trail. The lower mile or so of this section is not very distinct and is very difficult to hike because of all the overgrown brush. Negotiations are in progress with the Park Service for approval and there is a very complex process involved. This is in order to protect the Canyon from any actions that would have an environmental or historical impact. Since the approval process is quite involved it could take some time and maybe not even be approved. Gene Fowler Project Coordinator
